The Highlands is a spectacular community in Lynn Massachusetts. The first people to occupy the area were Native American Indians. They were the first to make residence along Sagamore Hill and High Rock. Many of their homes were built in and around the area, and some burial sites have been found. Later settlers arrived, and part of the colonial history is reflected in the Hutchinson Estate, Victorian homes and an observatory. This historic area occupies 1.5 square miles and has an estimated population of 11,000.
The Highlands is a forward-thinking neighborhood in the process of bringing some of the rough areas of its history around to create a more positive, community-oriented neighborhood. One of their efforts is to rehab the area parks and build gardens. By training the college-aged to work alongside the young school-age kids, they focus on both health and environmental issues. The Highlands Coalition is made up of people who live and work in the Highlands neighborhood. Working with the Lynn Housing Authority to expand housing, they also work toward creating jobs for youth as part of an anti-crime program. These changes in The Highlands began in 2006 and continue today. Starting at selected schools, they have begun planting trees and gardens which have some 30 different vegetables. These gardens not only provide work for the youth but also feed them. Now community gardens are being planned for parks and have many neighbors intending to help.
